AAIBS: Empowering Islamic Students to Uphold Independence

August 17, 1945, was a crucial day in Indonesia’s struggle for independence. This day marked a significant milestone for the Indonesian people, as the proclamation was read on that day, declaring independence, thus establishing equal standing with other nations. This independence resulted from a long struggle. History teaches us how precious independence is. Those who lived in the past risked their lives, wealth, and futures to free their country from colonial domination. Efforts to achieve Indonesian independence indirectly taught the importance of education for the next generation of the nation.

Santri and Santriwati are agents of change entrusted with carrying forward the nation’s ideals. With their strong energy and passion, they are expected to contribute meaningfully to national progress, especially in upholding independence. The role of ulama and Santri, from the struggle for independence to today’s era of freedom, cannot be overlooked. They were the ones who imbued the Indonesian people with confidence, even when they were being trampled by colonialists and labeled as ‘inlanders’ or inferiors. In the present day, this role must continue to be carried out by male and female students in their own time.

Studying at an Islamic boarding school (pesantren) is not only about pursuing religious knowledge, but also about seeking a deeper understanding of morality, ethics, and human values. Both Santri and Santriwati have a significant opportunity to play a vital role in advancing the Indonesian nation, especially amidst the current tide of globalization. Currently, many Santri and Santriwati misinterpret the meaning of independence. This often leads to them forgetting and ignoring the role they can play in the struggle to maintain independence.
Amidst the onslaught of technology and the complexities of globalization, independence is now not only about breaking free from the shackles of physical colonialism, but also about liberation from new forms of oppression. A free society is one capable of generating new ideas. Islamic boarding school students are believed to be capable of critical and creative thinking and possess skills relevant to the needs of the times.

To strengthen the independence of Santri and Santriwati, it is important to provide role models to guide them. One way to do this is by not being afraid to try new things. Life is given only once, and it should be lived with purpose. That’s the life principle held by our nation’s freedom fighters.

The freedom we must always reflect on is the courage to initiate and take risks. If neglected, it will weaken our spirit. Gather courage when we believe it will bring positive impacts for ourselves and those around us. Furthermore, santri and santriwati also need to continue strengthening ties and respecting one another. Indonesians have cared for one another despite differences. This is the unique meaning of Indonesian independence: tolerance. Despite our physical differences, we still love one another.

The role of Islamic boarding school students in maintaining Indonesian independence is not limited to physical contributions. They also need to strengthen the values of nationalism and patriotism. They need to instill a love for their homeland and actively participate in the nation’s development process. They need to develop their potential in various fields, particularly in the ever-evolving field of technology. They should also celebrate independence through their achievements. With the active role and tangible contributions of Islamic boarding school students, Indonesia’s independence will be safeguarded, guiding the nation toward progress and prosperity.

To fulfill this role, santri and santriwati naturally need a supportive environment and platform. Al-Azhar (KNO) Asy-Syarif, North Sumatra (AAIBS), is one Islamic boarding school known for implementing activities that support its Santri and Santriwati in contributing to independence. AAIBS has programs that empower its Santri and Santriwati in this regard. Every year, AAIBS commemorates Independence Day with activities that inspire both santri and santriwati, encourage teamwork, and responsibility. These activities build enthusiasm, solidarity, and a sense of shared responsibility among the students. This significantly supports the fundamental efforts to defend independence.

Al-Azhar (KNO) Asy-Syarif North Sumatera (AAIBS) also runs programs that prepare its Santri and Santriwati to play a role in independence, such as the Basic Leadership Program. This program teaches male and female students how to influence their environment and others. In addition, AAIBS offers extracurricular activities that allow Santri and Santriwati to develop their potential, creativity, and innovation. These resources significantly support their ability to fulfill and play a role in Indonesia’s independence. Furthermore, the moral and ethical teachings provided by AAIBS to its students can make them role models to be emulated and practiced by the community, both inside and outside of school.

The commemoration of August 17, 1945, reminds us of the priceless gift of independence handed down by our nation’s heroes. Today, Santri and Santriwati remain agents of change—carrying forward the nation’s ideals through education, tolerance, creativity, and courage—roles that institutions like Al-Azhar (KNO) Asy-Syarif North Sumatera (AAIBS) continue to nurture for generations to come.
